Best Materials for Outdoor Football Flags – Which One Should You Choose?

The material you choose for your flag affects everything from its appearance to its lifespan. Here’s a rundown of the most popular fabrics and how they perform in the stands and out in the elements.

Polyester

Polyester is the most common choice for football banners. It’s lightweight, dries quickly and handles wind well. Dye-sublimated polyester keeps colours vibrant and won’t crack or peel. It’s also widely accepted by stadiums because it can be treated to meet fire-retardant standards.

Nylon

Nylon is slightly heavier and has a bit more shine than polyester. It’s very strong and resists tearing, but it can absorb water and take longer to dry. For flags that will be flown outdoors continuously, nylon can be a good choice. However, it’s less common for stadium banners because it needs extra treatment for fire safety.

Cotton

Once popular for hand-painted banners, cotton has largely fallen out of favour for matchday flags. It’s heavy when wet, slower to dry and more likely to fade. That said, some supporters love the traditional look and feel. Cotton flags are better suited to indoor displays or occasional use.

Mesh

For very windy grounds, mesh fabric allows air to pass through, reducing strain on the flag and whatever it’s attached to. You’ll often see mesh used for surfer flags and large displays that need to be moved quickly. The trade-off is that graphics can appear less sharp due to the holes.

Choosing What’s Right for You

Think about how often you’ll use the flag, where it will be displayed and what weather conditions it’ll face. If you’re travelling week in, week out, polyester is a great all-rounder. If you’re hanging a flag outside a pub or in your garden, nylon or mesh might work better. Need something more eco-friendly? Ask us about recycled polyester options.
